1.18.08 or Slusho Viral Marketing Campaign

by: Anne Haynes

I don’t know if any of you saw the new trailer for an unnamed movie attached to the Transformers, but if anyone wants to follow a pretty innovative viral marketing campaign from its early stages, now might be a good time.

It’s a marketing campaign surrounding a new movie produced by J.J. Abrams, who is the writer/director behind LOST.

Following the steps below to learn more about 1.18.08 or Slusho and the viral marketing campaign:

1- Go to the Apple site and watch the 1.18.08 trailer

2 – Then got to 1.18.08 Site

3- Google “bloop”
It’s a campaign that crosses many sites about a physical phenomenon. They even have a fake news story embedded into cnn.com.

4- Google “Slusho”

JoBlo.com
“In other news, IGN has speculated that the film may be using the working title ‘SLUSHO’, the name of the slurpee-esque beverage that is offered to Jennifer Garner’s character in the second episode of ALIAS. Personally, I don’t care about the title, I’m already sold on this thing, by the super covert advertising campaign. Stay tuned for more info as it breaks!”

SlashFilm.com
“The Slusho.jp site seems to be a legit part of the Cloverfield viral marketing campaign.”

Bloop isn’t fake… I’ve been reading about Bloop for (I believe) a decade now. Possibly speculated to be part of Blue Whale mating.

    Or the ruins of R’yleh.

Anne, I’m curious as to how you came across the “bloop” phenomenon as a possible connection to the Cloverfield Project. Yours is the first reference to this that I’ve read.

The Cloverfield campaign is very interesting. The marketing firm behind it is doing a very good job. The Gossip Rag has some interesting news on it as well: http://www.thegossiprag.com

  6. [...] Another update. The Semidi blog point to a Search Engine Marketing blog by Anne Haynes that discusses the Cloverfield viral marketing campaign. Haynes says to Google the word “bloop” for clues. 1- Go to the Apple site and watch the 1.18.08 trailer [...]

Fake, huh? For someone running a site about SEM, you aren’t very good at the search part.

Re: Bloop. The “fake” CNN story is corroborated at NOAA: http://www.oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/sound01/background/seasounds/seasounds.html#Anchor-1515

Could the government be behind the unexplained and documented noise that is only vaguely peripheral to this film?

    John and Peoples-

I haven’t studied or watched this from the inception. I don’t follow, I’m clueless, but I enjoy viral marketing. I’ve been in search for several years and while I spend most of my time taking care of my clients, I appreciate it when colleagues and clients send me viral marketing 411′s. I learned about “bloop” from a colleague.

This bloop/sound thing under the ocean reminds me of the movie “Contact” but underwater.

So what is the dealio? Someone clue me in please! I’m more interested in the microscopic organisms so deep within the ocean that their light is able to power laptops and TV LCDs.

    P.S. thanks for the ranting
